Brits on cocaine charges to be sentenced next month
BY PAUL A REID Observer West writer
Thursday, December 29, 2011
MONTEGO BAY, ST JAMES — TWO British women, who were earlier this month found guilty of attempting to export over 140 pounds of cocaine from the island last year November, are to be sentenced on January 25.
Joanne Gordon and Pierrsha Kuranchie, both 37-years-old hairdressers were supposed to have been sentenced last week Monday in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, but the absence of their attorneys, as well as a probation report forced RM Winsome Henry to put off the date until next January.
The two were found guilty on charges of possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine and taking steps to export the drug, after a trial that lasted for months due to several postponements.
Both women were arrested on November 27 2010 at the Sangster International Airport when a quantity of cocaine weighing 146 pounds was found in their luggage, as they were being processed to travel to London.
The haul is believed to be the biggest ever at the Sangster International Airport. It is understood that the cocaine was hidden in bottles of shampoo and conditioners. Gordon is said have had 71 pounds, while Kuranchie had 75 pounds of the drug.
