Build the nation and forget elections — PJ

BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter

Thursday, February 09, 2012

ROUND HILL, Hanover - Former Prime Minister of Jamaica PJ Patterson is urging Jamaicans of varying political persuasions to join hands to push the nation further along the path of progress and development and to forget about the December 29 polls.

"I really hope particularly at this time, that irrespective of whatever positions people might have taken in the last elections, and however they might have chosen to exercise their democratic right, there is a recognition that the time has come when all of us have to work together to take our nation upward and forward," Patterson argued.

He was speaking last Saturday evening at the Round Hill Hotel, Hanover, during a banquet hosted in his honour by the People's National Party (PNP's) Region Six for his outstanding service to the PNP, Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Patterson who served as party leader and prime minister of Jamaica for 14 consecutive years, expressed his enthusiasm at the banquet and noted that in 1938 when the PNP was founded, Norman Manley insisted that it should be a "people party" and "it should be a national party".

"He (Manley) explained as his reason, the need to create a party where all persons, irrespective of class, gender, economic circumstances or age, could work together, so long as they were committed to the building of the nation, Jamaica. And that purpose still needs to inform everything that we do," he argued.

He was however quick to explain that he should not be misrepresented as articulating that the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) "has done nothing to advance the country over the period".

" What I am saying, however, is now that we have the responsibility of this country once again — as we celebrate our 50th year — let us accept the elections are behind us and the nation must move forward in unity and in strength to achieve our purpose," he appealed.

In the December 29 polls the PNP won 42 of the 63 parliamentary seats.

Saturday's function was attended by supporters from the two major political parties, as well as members of the business community and civic organisations.

Among the speakers were Portia Simpson Miller and Kenny Anthony, prime ministers of Jamaica and St Lucia, respectively.

Mr Patterson you are the father of hypocrisy. you did everything possible to see that your party suceeded at the polls and yes you are the wizard when it comes to that. While your party was in opposition they did everything to remove the JLP from PSM first speech in 2007 to 2012. your party believe its God,s gift to jamaica and you must rule at all cost now you are speaking about unity you are indeed the father of all hypocrisy please crawl back under your rock.

That has to start from the politicians. They have to stop removing persons in existing posts (ambassodors and board members for example) and show jamaica thay thay are not operating along political lines before they can come ask us to unite.
Why didnt PJ come out and say this when the other party was in power, say six months ago? Just trying to take jamaicans for fools another time.

@sonny black...they do not take us as fools...they have there own set of entrenched political airheads..to keep putting them back in Power..even after they have screwed the country for 18 years...persons like u and I can see the rubbish..but this is jamaica...and we self perpetuate and reward politicians who confuse the country with smoke and mirrors.

Yeah...riiight PJ! In opposition, they attack everything the government does & wage an all out effort to bring it to it's knees. In government, they want everyone to just be happy & support them & their efforts. This is part of a strategy to win elections at all costs. The other part is to say all the right things afterwards to weaken support for a counter-attack by the party in opposition.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of that large football that was being paraded in Jamaica shortly brefore the 1998 World Cup.At the time it was hailed as the largest football in the world . Considering that Mr . Patterson is such a 'giant of a Caribbean man ' , how about a cartoon depicting Mr Patterson holding up the ball a la Atlas holding up the world.

Where was this open display of Patriotism when they were in Opposition, i sometimes wonder if Politicians take us for fools or are we real fools. Their brazen display of double standards on a daily basis makes my blood boil.

why is it that members of the PNP only have this epihany of nation building when they are the Govt...where is this theory of nation building when they are in opposition....maybe they really believe what Norman said ..according to PJ..I would like to believe what he said...however Jamaicas unique brand of Party politics/governing makes me cynical and I see this as just another necessary self serving, nice sounding Bite..
