CC's Christopher Smith cops top prizes at ISSA/KFC Western basketball awards

MONTEGO BAY, St James - CORNWALL College's Christopher Ray Smith was the toast of Monday's awards ceremony for the ISSA/KFC Western Conference high school boys' basketball league held at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

Smith who led the Montego Bay-based institution to retain the Under-19 title with a perfect winning record copped four awards, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The sixth former also won awards for most three pointers made, most free throws and top scorer.

Two of his teammates were also winners, as Tevin Brown won the award for most assists, while Simmoy Noble was the top shot blocker.

Christopher Thompson of Green Pond High had the most steals, while Holland High's Kenrick Lindo was the top rebounder.

Karlington Barrett of Under-16 runners-up Muschett High was named MVP, as well as top scorer in his division.

Daniel Henry of champions Herbert Morrison Technical won the award for most steals, while sharing the award for most assists with Cornwall College's Kyle Schloss.

Cornwall College's Hakeem Grant was the top shot blocker, Robert Moss of Holland High was the top rebounder; Teavardo Daley of Spot Valley won the award for most three pointers, while Ralique Grant of Herbert Morrison was the top free throw taker.

Meanwhile, Cornwall College and William Knibb won the respective consolation play-off games, beating Holland High in both sections.

Cornwall College won the Under-16 game 41-31, after failing to score in the first quarter and falling behind 1-14.

Cornwall College rebounded to trail by just three points 14-17 at half-time, before outscoring Holland 27-14 in the second half.

Rashid Davis scored 13 points for Cornwall College, while Schloss scored eight points and got 13 rebounds, as well as nine steals and nine assists. Robert Moss scored 14 points for Holland.

In the Under-19 game, William Knibb also came from behind to beat neighbours Holland High 34-26, as Shavaughn Reid scored 21 points, while Kenrick Lindo scored 11 points and had 25 rebounds for the losers.
