ROSE HALL, St James — Jamaica's top ranked player Damion Johnson and Siquena Sinclair won the Men's and Ladies' Open categories at last weekend's second staging of the Iberostar Tennis Classic in Rose Hall.
Despite heavy showers that affected the schedule all weekend, the organisers managed to get the tournament over time before a major shower on Sunday.
Johnson had to work hard for his victory as he was taken to three sets by the US-based Elvis Henry before winning 6/2 2/6 7/6 (7/1) in a close game that had the crowd in their feet.
It was the second three-setter for Johnson as Montego Bay's Marcus Malcolm also took him the full distance in the semi-finals.
Henry was relatively well-rested for the final after getting by Kirk Bouland who was leading by a set when he twisted his ankle and was forced to retire.
Sinclair got off to a slow start and had to come back from a breakdown to beat Shadae Findley 7/5, 6/2 in the Ladies' Open final.
Sinclair and Findley beat last year's finalists Pauline Hylton and Lisa Chin respectively in the semi-finals.
Stephen Shirley squeezed past Michael Lawrence 3/6, 6/0, 7/6 (5) to win the Men's Amateur Class 2 event while Keith Jackson won the Men's Class 3 event, beating Andrew Brown 5/7, 6/3, 7/6 (7/2) in another close encounter.
