SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland -- The enforcement of municipal laws in the town of Savanna-la-Mar and Grange Hill was boosted on Monday with the addition of six municipal police officers, bringing to 15, the number of officers serving the parish of Westmoreland.
According to chairman of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Mayor Bertel Moore, the new municipal police will play a major role in strengthening the maintenance of public order and enhancing revenue collection across the parish.
"They will play a big role in the management of traffic in Savanna-la-Mar, where we have metered parking and will assist members of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) in Grange Hill, where many taxi operators are refusing to use the transportation centre," Hill told the Observer West.
He added that the officers will also assist in the enforcement of the building and construction regulations across the parish.
The new batch of officers recently completed an intensive five-week training programme at the Police Academy at Twickenham Park in St Catherine.
The Westmoreland municipal police was established in August 2008 to ensure enforcement of the regulations of the Westmoreland Parish Council, such as those that fall under the Places of Amusement Act, the Parochial Roads Act, the Road Traffic Act, the National Solid Waste Management Act, and the Public Health Nuisance Act.
