Thursday, August 16, 2012
MONTEGO BAY, St James - Defending champions Pacers 'A' defeated former champions Angels 'A' after extra time in the final of the St James Goodwill Open League Netball competition, played at the Overton Netball Court, last Sunday.
Spectators were treated to some scintillating display of netball as both teams battle for supremacy.
At the end of regulation time both teams were locked at 22-22.
Earlier, Angels 'A' had a narrow 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Pacers 'A' rallied to take the second 6-4, and went in at half time leading 11-10. The third ended 4-4 and Angels 'A' took the final quarter, 7-6, to level scores.
Nervous spectators bit their nails at the end of regulation time when the whistle blew for the dreaded five minutes extra time.
Both teams were excellent in defense and attack, but it was the Pacers team, led by Latoya Collins, which held their nerves to win the extra time period, 4-2, and took home the coveted trophy for the second straight year.
Doreta Daley led the way for the Champions with 18 goals, and Samantha Dennison chipped in with 8.
Nicole Fletcher was equally brilliant with 18 goals for Angels 'A', with Karen Hamilton and Bridget Brown sharing 6 goals down the middle.
In the 3rd place curtain raiser, Pacers 'B' got by Starlight 'A' 30-24.
