Spanish Ambassador lauds Naz Children Centre
BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter
Thursday, December 15, 2011
IRONSHORE, St James — Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, Celsa Nuno has lauded the management of the Naz Children Centre in Ironshore for their high quality of education offerings to children with special needs.
" I wish to commend the efforts that the Naz Centre make to provide an inclusive education, and in particular give children of mixed abilities an opportunity for complete participation in a traditional classroom setting, where dedicated teachers build the students' sense of accomplishment and self esteem, as well as assist them to maximise their academic potential," the Spanish envoy declared.
She added: "In the case of children, it is important that those with special needs get into, and form part of the mainstream of schooling, bearing in mind that the correct management of their educational requirements is complex and requires specialised teacher training".
According to Nuno, who is also the president of the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation, the provision of academic services to children with mixed abilities by the Naz Children Centre was one of the factors which influenced the decision by the foundation to support the school.
She was speaking recently during a handing over ceremony at the school of $150,000 worth of educational material, donated by the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation.
The Naz Children's Centre is a mixed ability school which caters for children with or without disabilities. The school, which has been in operation since 2005, began as a home-based after school programme which evolved into a formal educational institution.
