FALMOUTH, Trelawny - CHAIRMAN of the Civic and Community Affairs Committee of the Trelawny Parish Council Philip Service has expressed disappointment over the Government's $3-million allocation to fund Jamaica 50 activities in the parish.
At the same time, Service who also chairs the Jamaica 50 Planning Committee for Trelawny, is appealing to the private sector and the Ministry of Youth and Culture to provide more funding for the parish's planned activities.
Speaking at the launch of the committee's activities for Trelawny's celebrations at the Falmouth Town Hall on Monday, Service said the parish is facing a shortfall of $2 million for activities associated with the celebrations.
"An additional $2 million would certainly help us. We continue to make an appeal to corporate Jamaica to come on board. At the same time we are thankful for all the sponsors that are already on board as we work together to create an event that is world class," he told reporters.
The committee has planned a series of events which began on Tuesday and will end on Independence Day, August 6. The activities will include a library exhibition, a road race, and a fishing tournament.
Service also noted that from August 1-6, Water Square in Falmouth, will be transformed into what he described as an "Independence Village".
"We will be making approximately 30 boats out of bamboo that will be available for rental to the public and they will be able to use them to offer craft, food and anything that they can go into, based on whatever activities are taking place," he said.
