Rat Attack
West Green resident fingers UDC for nuisance

WEST GREEN, St James -- PRESIDENT of the West Green Citizen's Association Vilma Clarke wants the State's Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to do something about the pile-up of garbage on its land which borders her premises.
"People have thrown old freezers, fans and all sort of things over there. I can't get any assistance from UDC, who the land belongs to, or the St James Parish Council. I have spoken to National Environment and Planning Agency... no response, "she told the Observer West.
According to Clark, rats have infested her premises as a result of the nusciance.
"The public health officer says I must rodent-proof my house and so we want somebody to take action now," Clarke rued.
She said that following a fire, allegedly set by unknown persons in a bid to destroy the garbage two weeks ago, sent even more rats scurrying to her home.
In addition to the rats, Clark is up against the threat of squatters whom she says are poised to capture the land.
"Persons are showing interest in capturing the property but I am preventing them. They brought a tractor and I stood in the way of the construction of house there. The area should be sorted out and we could use it to construct a community centre," Clarke said.
UDC area manager Lisa Golding yesterday promised to verify the ownership of the land.
