Zone A Ben Francis KO spot at stake

BY PAUL A REID Observer West Writer MONTEGO BAY, St James

A place in the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Ben Francis Knock Out could be at stake on Saturday when joint Zone A leaders Cornwall College and St James High meet in a return round game at Jarrett Park, set to start at 3:30pm.

Both are tied on six points from their three first round games from two wins and a loss, but Cornwall College who will be seeking to return to the Knock Out competition for the first time since 2007, holds a slight lead on goal difference.

The winners of each of the zones from the daCosta Cup qualify for the Ben Francis KO. St James High has represented Zone A over the last four years, winning in 2008.

With just four teams competing in Zone A following the withdrawal of Irwin High and Anchovy High, each team will play just six games and so points will be at a premium for each team, as they seek to advance past the first round.

Despite being dominated in their first meeting this season, St James High clipped Cornwall College 1-0 and will be hoping to make it five wins in their last six meetings.

Since their loss to St James, Cornwall has won their last two games by a 5-0 aggregate and their confidence will be high going into Saturday's game.

On Tuesday, Cornwall blanked Maldon High 3-0 at Jarrett Park after a 2-0 win over Green Pond in their previous outing, while St James High rebounded from their upset 0-1 loss to Maldon on Saturday to edge Green Pond 1-0.
