| SOLOMON... Poetry is a great medium to inform, educate and uplift |
MONTEGO BAY, St James - A group of Houston poets, who have been dubbed the 'Magnificent Seven', will take the stage at Pier 1's popular seafood festival tomorrow, with their special brand of entertainment poetry.
The group constitutes a blend of African American, Caribbean, European and Hispanic poets, who will give their audience glimpses into life from their diverse cultures through fast, electrifying poetry. Their performance is to be complemented by local artistes Sajoya and Chandis from the Kingston-based Pum Pum Poets, and reggae violinist Mark Stephenson out of Mandeville.
The management at Pier 1 is putting on the event in tandem with Montego Bay actress and poet Makeda Solomon. Solomon, in a release to the Observer, noted that poetry has changed over the years.
"Poetry has come a long way since our classroom recitations of sometimes very still pieces. With the help of such Dub Poets as Mutabaruka, the image of poetry has changed in the mind of your average Jamaican," the release said.
The actress, who was responsible for putting together the "Poetry and Wine" evening at the Fairfield Theatre last December, said her mission is to bring poetry to the so-called common man.
"Poetry is a great medium to inform, educate and uplift. Add some drums, music & movement and you get entertainment added to the bargain," she noted in the release.
