'Build more Multi-Purpose stadiums' - Simoes

Thursday, May 15, 2008

National football Technical Director Rene Simoes has called for more stadiums like the year-old Trelawny Multi-purpose stadium (TMPS) to be built in the country.

"This stadium (TMPS) is no white elephant," the Brazilian said on Monday at a press conference at Starfish Resort to officially announce Jamaica's CONCACAF World Cup qualifying game against the Bahamas on June 18.

The TMPS will host the Jamaica 'home' leg of the two-way tie after the Bahamians opted for Jamaica to host both legs, the national stadium in Kingston being the venue for the first game, the revious Sunday.

Simoes, who returned to Jamaica in January for his second stint as technical director, said one quality stadium outside of Kingston was not sufficient as "the football programme belongs to the entire island".

He suggested that there should be at least one such stadium in each of the four football Confederations and compared this to Trinidad and Tobago where the eastern Caribbean country had five venues capable of hosting World Cup games.

Simoes went on to say he had spoken to SuperClubs executive Zein Issa-Nakash, about reviving the field at their hotel in Braco, Trelawny.

The national team had made the field at Braco one of their bases outside of Kingston where they used to train from time to time.
