HAILE MIKA'EL
Thursday, October 09, 2008

The Social Development Commission's (SDC) 20/20 Cricket Parish Competition will get underway on Saturday with the sixteen best cricket teams in Westmoreland competing in eight matches at four venues.

"It is geared toward engaging communities, rekindling the community spirit through sport, with the aim of building better long-term relationships among them," said SDC Parish Manager Ron Daley. "At the same time, it will showcase cricketing skills at the community level."

Organised in the knockout format with all matches on Saturdays - including the finals on November 1 at New Hope Primary & Junior High, Whitehouse - the teams will play within their geographical areas for the preliminary and quarter-final rounds.

The first match, admission to which is free, begins at 10:00 am.

The first round will see:
. Grange Hill playing Strawberry and Frome facing Burnt Savannah at Belle Isle;
. Cornwall Mountain against Barney Side and Bethel Town opposing New Roads at Barney Side;
. Petersville hosting Sav Business Association (Westmoreland Police) and Defending Champions Whitehouse confronting Bluefields at the same venue.
The Chantilly Playfield will be the venue for the Delve Land versus Smithfield and Chantilly versus Broughton encounters.

Cash prizes of $30,000 and $15,000 await the winner and runner-up respectively.

Additionally, the winner will be given the added incentive of vying for the All-Island Title and $150,000.00 cash.
The second and third-placed national teams will earn $75,000.00 and $30,000.00 respectively.
