David Stair is Hanover's new custos

Thursday, May 07, 2009

David N A Stair is to be installed as Hanover's new Custos Rotulorum today.

The ceremony, which will take place at 2:00 pm at the Jockey International factory at Lucea, will see Governor General Patrick Allen administering the oath of office.

Stair, the current medical officer at the Sandy Bay Health Centre in Hanover, succeeds Mavis King, who resigned over a year ago due to failing health.
His appointment follows many years of dedicated community service as:

. Chairman of the Hanover Parish Health Committee;

. Member of the Board of Governors of Rusea's High School and

. Member of the Board of the Hanover Mediation Centre.
In the mid-1980s Dr. Stair served as Medical Officer for Operation Friendship and conducted several clinics in West Kingston, Portmore and Portland.

The installation of the new Custos will see the nearly 150 Lay Magistrates reaffirming their oath as Justices of the Peace for the parish of Hanover and will affix their signature to the new Roll of Justices.

In addition to the Governor General, Prime Minister Bruce Golding is expected to address the ceremony which will be attended by the tradition pomp and pagentry.

As Custos, Stair's duties as the Governor-General's representative in the parish will include receiving the Sovereign or any representative of the Royal Family and the Governor General, whenever they are in the precincts of the parish. He will also serve as the Chief Magistrate for Hanover.

Justices of the Peace are required to be in position by 1:00 pm while invited guests are being asked to be seated by 1:30 pm.
