MONTEGO BAY, St James -
A thanksgiving service for Astil Sangster, the late politician and agriculturist, will be held at the Mount Ward Methodist Church in Ramble, Hanover on Saturday.

Deputy prime minister Dr Kenneth Baugh and a host of government officers and representatives from the island's sugar sector are expected to attend.

Sangster died on May 29 at the Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital in Westmoreland after a protracted illness.
He was 75 years old.

A businessman and former parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture during the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration of the 1980s, Sangster was remembered by Prime Minister Bruce Golding for his significant contribution to the growth and development of the sugar industry.

The late agriculturist served as vice chairman of the Jamaica Sugar Cane Growers Association (JSCGA), formerly All Island Jamaica Cane Farmers Association and vice president of Caribbean Cane Farmers Association. He was also the chairman of the West End Cane Farmers Association, a board member of the Sugar Industry Authority (SIA), as well as a board member of Jamaica Cane Products Sales.

Chairman of the JSCGA, Allan Rickards who described Sangster as a friend and confidant, added: "So committed was he to the agricultural sector that despite his illness, he continued to make a meaningful contribution to the industry." Astil Sangster, a member of the Sangster family of politicians, was one of three relatives who served as member of parliament between 1980 and 1983.

The others were Kingsley Sangster for South East St Catherine and Derrick Sangster in South West St Elizabeth. Astil is survived by his wife, Jean, one son, Robert and three grandchildren. He will be interred at the Coke's View Methodist Church Cemetery in Withorn, Westmoreland.
