MONTEGO BAY, St James
Prominent Montego Bay businessman and politician, Glendon Harris, was on Tuesday returned unopposed as president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society/St James Association of Branch Societies, at the association's annual general meeting held at the St Johns Church Hall, in Montego Bay.

A first vice-president of the JAS, Harris' executive will comprise:

. Vivian Douglas, first vice-president;
. Albert Tomlinson, second vice-president;
. Lorna Clarke, secretary;
. Marjorie Vernon, assistant secretary and
. Hope Leach, treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Harris who begins his ninth consecutive year at the helm of the association, challenged the farmers to make next year's Montpelier Agricultural and Livestock show the best ever.

"You need to start preparing for the show now by planting crops and preparing the ground so that the show can reach a point where is the best in the Western Hemisphere," he told the members.

The event which features agriculture and livestock produce, as well as an entertainment package is
held annually on the
Easter weekend.

Meanwhile, the outgoing president of the 114-year-old JAS, Senator Norman Grant, who demits office next month has endorsed Harris' candidacy as president of
the association.

"Since I am not able to run again for president because of constitutional constraints, then he who has worked and supported me as first vice- president, I will not have a problem in endorsing him to go forward," said Grant.

Harris who has been the association's first vice- president for the past six years is expected to do battle with chairman of the Jamaica Sugar Cane Growers Association, Allan Rickards for the presidency.

The JAS executive election will be held on July 8 at
the Denbigh show ground
in Clarendon.
