MONTEGO BAY, St James - Ten-year-old Hanna Johnson of the Heinz Simonitch Preparatory School and 11-year-old Adrianna Tyndale of Catherine Hall Primary are among several budding swimmers who hope to improve their skills now that they have a 25m lap pool to train in.

The pool, which is located at Montego River Gardens in Portobello, is a dream come true for director Rosie Logan-Ferrer who has been battling to establish adequate training facilities for children in western Jamaica for over a decade.

"This is the start of something wonderful that will add to the development of the mission of the Swim Place Sports and Culture Club," said Logan, who views swimming as a life sport.

A graduate of the University of New Brunswick, Canada, where she read for a degree in Physical Education and Sociology, Logan estabished the Swim Place Sports and Culture Club as a family business to facilitate the development and exposure of children.

"Swimming is an activity that works the entire body and mind for people of all ages, stages, fitness and health levels. It can be used to get well and stay well. It is often the sport recommended by doctors for people with ailments from back problems, Hyper/Hypo tension, diabetes and other problems," she said.
Logan, who is also the pioneer of the Blue Marlin Swim Club in Montego Bay, has over the years prepared children for competitive swimming.

In May she took 11 children representing five schools from Montego Bay to the annual Nestle Ice Cream Prep/Primary Schools Swim Championships in Kingston.
Of the 11 children aged four to 11, nine made the finals.

Tyndale won the third-place trophy for primary schools with a silver medal 50m Breaststroke and two bronze medals in the 50m freestyle and backstroke and fourth place ribbons in the 100m IM Individual Medley and 50m Butterfly, while Johnson won a silver medal for 50m backstroke and two bronze medals for 100m and 50m butterfly.

"The children all represented themselves well and there is only room for improvement now," said Logan.
