More help for Hurlock six

HURLOCK, St James -
The Kiwanis Club of Providence, which worked closely with the Food For the Poor and Scotiabank on a major Labour Day project to construct a two-bedroom timber house for an almost destitute family of six, has furnished them with a brand new divan bed.

Thirty six-year-old Terry-Ann Guyah, who used to occupy a rickety one-room board structure with three of her five children - Georgia and Nicola, and son Caval - moved into the newly-constructed house on Tuesday following the handover of the bed.

"I couldn't sleep Saturday night and I woke up early Sunday morning, about four o clock. We are very grateful to Scotia and Food for the Poor and Scotia," Guyah told the Observer West Tuesday morning.

She will be rejoined this weekend by her two small sons, aged five, and three, who had to be relocated to their father who lives in Trelawny, because of the limited accommodation.

According to Dr Doris Channer-Watson, president designate of the Kiwanis Club of Providence, the family's plight was brought to the attention of a trio of Saulters Hill Baptist Church members four years ago following an outreach programme in the Hurlock community.

The family's need was communicated to Glenda Miller and Janet Richards, both employees of Scotiabank and members of Kiwanis Club of Providence.
The two subsequently convinced the bank to join with Food of the Poor and members of the service club to help.
