THE first of two state-of-the-art cancer treatment centres has been officially opened. Located on the grounds of the Cornwall Regional Hospital, this centre will see more Jamaicans diagnosed with various types of cancers getting access to modern technology to help in their fight against the disease.

This is significant as cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Jamaica, accounting for 21 per cent of all deaths, second only to cardiovascular disease.

This new treatment centre will provide radiation therapy for cancer patients using Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Technology, which is in line with international standards.

Among the benefits of the treatment centre will be a significantly reduced cost of cancer treatment to Jamaicans, reducing the financial burden on the health care sector, and improving the quality care to cancer patients.

The second centre, which will be located at the St Joseph's Hospital in Kingston, is slated to open in February 2018.

The full project, which includes the two centres, came at a cost of over US$14 million.
