Khemlani Mart donates $26,000 TV to Police Road Safety Unit
WESTERN BUREAU — The Area One Police Road Safety Unit got a much-need boost this week when the general manager of Khemlani Mart, Dino Chatani, presented them with a 25-inch television set, valued at over $26,000.
The presentation was made during a brief ceremony held at the Khemlani Mart that only recently opened its doors along Union Street in Montego Bay.
In accepting the gift on behalf of the unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Area One, Linton Latty, expressed gratitude to the furniture retail giant, and assured its general manager that the police would take “very good care” of the gift.
Latty later told the Observer that the television would greatly assist the unit in educating thousands of children across western Jamaica about proper road usage. According to the ACP, two years ago the television set that was assigned to the unit was taken out of service when it began to malfunction.
“When that happened a corporal assigned to the unit started to use his own television until it too was broken down,” he added.
Chatani said at the handover ceremony that he had quickly agreed to make the donation when he heard of the unit’s plight.
“We believe that unit performs a very good function and is doing a wonderful job, so we quickly agreed,” he said, adding that his company would continue to contribute to community-based projects.
It was last month that the company opened the 12,000 square foot store in the resort city, representing an investment of $50 million.
