St Catherine cabbies for court today
OCHO RIOS, St Ann – Two St Catherine cabbies who were arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property and attempted larceny are to appear in the St Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrate’s court today.
The men were caught, last Thursday morning, trying to steal a car in Green Acres, St Ann’s Bay.
They are Patrick Dalbert, 28, from Linstead, and Bernard “Ricky” Wellington, 34, from Bog Walk.
The Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) liaison officer for St Ann said that at about 1:00 am on Thursday, December 18, four men entered premises at Greenwich Acres in St Ann’s Bay and attempted to steal a 1999 Toyota Sprinter motor car, licensed 6500 EC.
The men reportedly forced open the car’s right front door and attempted to push the vehicle from the yard. But they were surprised by lawmen who managed to hold Dalbert and Wellington. The others escaped.
The St Ann police have also detained a man in connection with the shooting death of gas station attendant, 32 year-old Dave Davis, who was killed on December 13 after two gunmen held up and robbed the McDowell’s Texaco Service Station in Claremont in the parish.
The suspect, who is scheduled to face an identification parade later this week, was one of five men detained in police raids carried out by lawmen in Windsor Heights and Steer Town last Thursday morning.
Davis, who is from Riverhead district in St Ann, was shot shortly before 3:00 pm when the gunmen held up the station and stole a cash box containing an undetermined sum of money. Upon leaving, they fired several shots, one of which hit Davis.
A 34 year-old farmer was also hit during the shooting.
Four other men who have been detained by the police are also being held in connection with a spate of robberies committed in St Ann.
The recent police operations come just four days after about 50 residents of Steer Town blocked the main road leading to St Ann’s Bay to protest what they claimed was cops’ tardiness in responding to reports of robberies in the community.
The detainees are to face an identification parade later this week.
The CCN liaison officer for St Ann said the St Ann’s Bay CIB, the St Ann special squad and members of the Area Two flying squad jointly carried out the operations.
