Canadian woman may give birth behind bars
Sarah-Lynn Duvall, a 22 year-old Canadian resident who is seven months pregnant, will be in jail when she delivers her child.
She was fined $522,000 and sentenced to a year behind bars after she was found guilty of breaches of the Dangerous Drug Act this week.
Duvall was arrested at the Sangster International Airport on December 21 while attempting to board an Air Canada flight to Toronto.
At about 2:00 pm that day, she was stopped and interviewed at the security checkpoint then taken to the luggage chute where she identified a black and blue suitcase as belonging to her.
The suitcase was searched and a false compartment was detected on each side. The compartments contained seven rectangular-shaped packages with cocaine weighing two pounds.
The substance was showed to Duvall and she was also made aware that it was cocaine but she did not respond, the court was told.
She was subsequently arrested and charged for possession of, dealing in, and taking steps to export the drug.
For possession of the drug, Duvall was fined $72,000 or six months and another $150,000 or six months for dealing in it. On the charge of attempting to export, she was fined $300,000 or six months, in addition to doing the mandatory 12 months at hard labour.
