10 accused of guest house robbery released
WESTERN BUREAU – The 10 men who were taken into custody in connection with the recent robbery of the Tigress 2 Villa in Negril, have been released after persons failed to point them out during an identification parade.Crime chief for the Area One Police Division, Superintendent John Morris, confirmed yesterday that the 10 men who were held shortly after the incident in the Westmoreland community of Big Bridge, had to be released due to lack of proper identification. “We have not made any arrest, but investigations are still continuing into the incident,” Morris said yesterday.
A police source told the Observer that the accused were wearing masks at the time of the robbery, making it difficult for persons to point them out. The accused, the source said, were not in possession of the items that the tourists reported were stolen from them during the robbery of the villa.
Robbers earlier this month went to the Tigress 2 Villa at West End, Negril, and reportedly tied up and gagged the lone security guard on duty at the complex. They then used crowbars and other objects to force their way into rooms occupied by the tourists, where they robbed 15 of them of cash and jewellery.
One of the visitors received a machete wound to the head during the ordeal, and had to seek medical attention. The police were called in, and following the combing of the town, ten men were held hours later in the Big Bridge area of parish. Police said three of the men had Kingston addresses.
