4 dead, 16 injured in accidents
WESTERN BUREAU – Four people were killed in two accidents in western Jamaica over the weekend, while another 16 were treated for injuries at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
The dead were identified as:
. Oshane Beckford, 19;
. Andre Callam, 17, both of Lilliput in St James; and
. David Scott, 22; and
. Andre Higgins, 27, of Martha Brae, Trelawny.
Higgins and Scott died shortly after leaving a party in Hague, Trelawny, when their Honda 600 F4 motor cycle got out of control at about 1:00 am yesterday.
The police reported that just after leaving the Hague Agricultural Showground, the rider failed to negotiate a bend, causing the motor cycle to get out of control and fall into a gully.
Higgins and Scott, who were both thrown from the motorcycle, died on the spot.
It could not be ascertained who was riding the ill-fated motorcycle, as both men are known to ride it at different times.
The motor cycle was said to be owned by David Scott, a member of the Holland United football team.
Beckford and Callam died after the Toyota Corolla motor car that they were travelling in collided with a Toyota Coaster passenger bus on the Rose Hall main road, in the vicinity of the Sea Castle Hotel. They received multiple injuries and died on the spot. Beckford allegedly drove the vehicle without the consent of his father, the owner of the car.
Meanwhile, a number of passengers in the bus with which the car collided received injuries and were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where they received treatment and were sent home.
Allegations are that around 7:30 pm Saturday the car, driven by Beckford, who reportedly did not have a valid driver’s licence, ran into the path of a bus near Barrett Town.
Marlene Beckford, the mother of Oshane, was yesterday in a state of shock and disbelief at the family home in Lilliput. She had to seek treatment at the Cornwall Regional Hospital after she learnt of the accident.
Her sister, Bev, who was equally traumatised by the news mustered up enough courage to speak to the Observer.
“Me no know how we ago cope. ,” she lamented.
She said that she had heard Oshane’s father, Milton, saying that he had not seen the car, and she told him that it appeared that Oshane had driven it away.
It was during that discussion, she said, that a resident from the area came and reported that the two had died in a car accident.
