Kiwanis club presents children’s rights video to PM
THE Kiwanis Club of New Kingston on Thursday presented a copy of their recent music video This time is yours to Prime Minister P J Patterson, as part of the club’s Rights and Responsibility of Children project.
The theme song of the video Protect our children, treat them right is part of the Kiwanis club’s main project which is aimed at bringing public attention to the need to take care of the children.
Patterson commended the membership of the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston for their efforts, highlighting the importance of the project to society. He said that it was essential in helping the society to prepare to nurture children from birth until they are able to provide for themselves. “This has been a focal point of the government’s attention. But while the government has certain inescapable responsibilities, it is a job that extends beyond government to embrace the entire society,” the prime minister said.
The Kiwanis project, he said, was very worthwhile, noting that in today’s society children are exposed to all kinds of influences and in some instances, abuse and parental neglect.
He expressed the hope that, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Jamaica Information Service, the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston would be able to get the message across to the widest possible audience.
The music video was produced through the voluntary work of Tony Rebel, Nadine Sutherland, Marcia Griffiths, Assassin, Susan Couch, Nikki Ben and Michael Harris. The song was written by Michael Harris and Michael Holgate.
With the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the video has been sent around the world and will be shown at the Kiwanis District Convention to be held in Canada in August. It will be placed on the UNICEF website locally and will eventually be sent to over 160 UNICEF offices worldwide.
