Woman fined $300,000 for illegal gaming
BOG WALK, St Catherine – A 37 year-old St Catherine woman was Wednesday fined $300,000 for breaches of the Gaming and Lotteries Act when she appeared in the Linstead Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Jean Tennant, of Magazine Lane in Bog Walk, who was charged with unlawful gaming and illegal bookmaking, pleaded guilty to the offences. But she told the court that at the time of her arrest she was conducting the business on behalf of someone else.
The court was told that on June 27, 2004 at 12:30 in the afternoon, the police and personnel from the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission went to Magazine Lane in Bog Walk where they observed Tennant writing cash pot tickets and collecting from persons gathered around her.
On approach of the police, she ran, leaving behind $2,000 in cash and cash pot tickets. She was chased and held. She was subsequently arrested and charged.
