Cops donate textbooks valued at $200,000 to St Catherine students
POLICE officers from the South St Catherine division’s community relations department on Sunday gave 33 students attending primary and secondary schools textbooks valued at $200,000.
All the publications were on the students’ book list for the new school term, and Donniel McNab, one of the recipients, told the Observer that she planned to start studying right away.
“I am glad I got my books before school so I can prepare myself properly. I will try my best to do well,” McNab said.
The cops handed out the books at a ceremony at the Greater Portmore police station to the group of needy and gifted students from the parish.
“We saw the need to bridge the gap between the community and the police, and this is only one way to achieve that,” Sergeant Jacqueline Brown, coordinator of the book give-away, told the Observer . “Education is one of the best crime-fighting tools, as knowledge might prevent these young people from becoming criminals”.
This is the seventh year the cops have handed out textbooks to needy students.
The Police Federation, Police Cooperative Credit Union, Carlong Publishers, McKay Security and Member of Parliament, Fitz Jackson sponsored the project.
