Hitman case put off until next Tuesday
WESTERN BUREAU – The case against Clement Majerus, who has been accused of hiring a hit man to kill a man with whom he had a long-running dispute, was yesterday postponed until next Tuesday.
Majerus, a 49-year-old labourer from West End, Negril and Arlington Heights in Illinois, USA, was remanded in the custody of the Westmoreland police after his court appearance yesterday. He had appeared before the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate’s Court on charges of conspiracy to murder.
He is being represented by attorney-at-law Vernon Ricketts.
Cops apprehended Majerus after the fatal shooting of 55-year-old taxi operator Michael Dally, who was also from West End.
According to Observer sources, both men had a long-standing dispute over land. It is alleged that Majerus conspired with an unknown man, who shot and killed Dally at his home. There are reports that Majerus later confessed that he had paid $70,000 to have Dally killed.
According to Constabulary Communication Network liaison officer for Westmoreland Thomozene Foster, at about 2:55 am on July 9, Dally was at his home when he became aware of a strong scent of gasoline outside his house. He opened his door and was about to step outside when he was shot in his head. He died on the spot.
A .45 caliber spent shell was found at the scene and two containers of gasolene were also found outside the house.
At the time, no motive was established for the shooting.
Majerus has been booked to return to court on September 7.
