A vehicular smash-up on Highway 2000 yesterday has left 10 persons nursing scrapes and bruises and seven motor vehicles extensively damaged after said vehicles slammed into each other in the vicinity of the Spanish Town toll plaza at about 12:30 pm yesterday.

The passengers were taken to the Spanish Town hospital. No-one was critically injured.

Sergeant McDonald of the Ferry Traffic division told the Sunday Observer that a cane fire burning along the roadside caused temporary loss of visibility, resulting in the accident.

“At about 12:30, the seven vehicles were travelling towards the toll booth in the westbound lane of the highway when on reaching a section of the road, a thick cloud of smoke from a bush fire obscured the roadway,” he said. “This forced some cars to slow down and when this happened the ones behind slammed into them.”

He said the damaged vehicles were taken by wrecker to a facility on Hagley Park Road in Kingston.

The vehicles included four pick up trucks, a Suzuki motorcar, a Nissan and a Toyota car.

Firefighters from the Spanish Town fire station were called in to douse the cane blaze.
