Top level Chinese official arrives tomorrow
Cheng Siwei, the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, (NPC), China’s highest legislative body, is scheduled to arrive in Jamaica tomorrow on a two-day visit hosted by the Jamaica China Friendship Association.
Shortly after his arrival, Cheng will pay a courtesy call on the governor-general at King’s House, after which he will visit the prime minister. His schedule on Saturday includes a meeting with the executives of the Jamaica China Friendship Association, lunch at Sans Souci Resort and a visit to Dunn’s River Falls and Prospect Plantation in St Ann.
He will return to Kingston where he will be hosted at a Jamaica China Friendship Association dinner at King’s House under the patronage of the governor-general.
Among the functions of the NPC is the election of the president of the People’s Republic of China.
Cheng is also the chairman of the China People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and president of the China Latin America Friendship Association.
A University of California-trained engineer, Cheng has spent a lifetime working in the chemical engineering field and contributing at the policy level on the development of China’s petrochemical industry. He has served as chief engineer, vice chairman at the Ministry of Chemical Industry and at the Science and Technology Bureau.
He is also the current chairman of the China Democratic National Construction Association, as well as chairman of the China Soft Science Research Society.
