Cops identify 24 men wanted for shootings in capital
Police yesterday revealed the names and aliases of 24 men who they suspect as being behind a number of shootings in the capital, Kingston and St Andrew.
According to Major Investigation Task Force (MIT) commander, Senior Superintendent Calvin Benjamin, the wanted men are armed and dangerous. He said some of the criminals were responsible for the rash of murders which have taken place in connection with a gang bust-up in the garrison community of Common, which runs off Red Hills Road. Others, he said, were responsible for murders and shootings in Arnett Gardens and the St Andrew South police division.
“The men wanted in connection with the violence in Common are Ian Simpson, also called ‘Giant’; Denver Pink, and men known only as ‘Bang’, ‘Dello’, ‘Little’, ‘Eric’, ‘Lukong’ and ‘Joe Joe’. We are seeking the assistance of the public in nabbing these men,” Benjamin said during a press conference at the MIT headquarters in Kingston.
The residents of Common have been under the gun since a well-organised gang turned on itself and began murdering members, their relatives and other persons in the community on the morning of the Jamaica Labour Party annual conference in November last year. More than a dozen families have been forced to flee the area, and gangsters have taken over their homes, police say. The cops also say the gangsters have looted the homes and are now charging rent.
“We will be moving to bring normality back to the area,” Benjamin said.
The death tally as a result of the conflict in Common is 25.
The police have also named four men who they say have committed multiple murders and shootings in Arnett Gardens. They were identified by their aliases, ‘CVM’, ‘Rem Rem’, ‘Shaniel’ and ‘Marlon’.
Two suspected cop killers, Leaford Powell, also called ‘Harry Dog’ and Christopher Williams, also called ‘Cheese Trix’, were also listed as wanted by the MIT. Powell is suspected of having a hand in the slaying of Corporal Dave Daley, who was shot dead in Duhaney Park last week, while ‘Cheese Trix’ is believed to be the gunman who shot and killed Special Constable Charles Gordon as he conducted a traffic check at the busy downtown intersection of Barry and King streets last month. Gordon died 12 days after the attack. A one million-dollar reward has been posted for information leading to ‘Cheese Trix’s’ capture.
The police say men known only as ‘Coolie Roberts’, ‘Boy George’, ‘Remando’, ‘Bap Bap’, Shawn, also called ‘Coach’, ‘Devon’, and ‘Bryan’ are responsible for a number of serious crimes, including murder and shooting, in the St Andrew South police division.
Benjamin told reporters yesterday that the probe into the murder of entertainment personality Christine Hewitt had taken them to the US city of New York and a breakthrough was expected.
“We have been conducting scientific investigations and we are questioning people,” Benjamin said, adding that the local police were being assisted by their counterparts in New York.
Hewitt’s charred remains were found in a minivan in Bamboo, St Catherine in July last year. An autopsy revealed that she was stabbed before being set on fire.
