JN managers, supervisors get union representation
THE Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) has won bargaining rights for managers and supervisors at the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), following a representational rights polls conducted by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security last Tuesday.
The poll, held at the company’s 31 locations in the 14 parishes, ended an eight-month-long process.
Among managers, the 49 eligible managers, 47 voted for the union, one person voted no and one person did not vote; and among supervisors, 105 were eligible, of which 101 voted for the union and four persons did not vote for various reasons.
Following the announcement of the results, Clayson Panton,BITU senior negotiator, called for amendments to the provisions in the Labour Relations and Industrial Disputes Act (LRIDA) to facilitate an easier bargaining rights process.
He complained that it took the union more than eight months to have the poll scheduled, instead of weeks, which he said frustrated the workers.
