Yet another fire at Riverton landfill
ALMOST two months after the Riverton City dump puffed huge amounts of thick, black smoke around the Corporate Area and sections of St Catherine, the landfill is again on fire.
But according to landfill manager, Clive McDonald, this blaze “is nothing compared to the last one”.
McDonald said the fire started about 2:00 pm yesterday after a disposal truck had unloaded its waste at the Spanish Town Road facility. McDonald theorised that organic material from a garden or some other green area had been set ablaze, but was not properly extinguished before the remnants were loaded onto the truck.
“The fire arrived in the disposal truck. Sometimes people light their garden stuff and don’t put out the fire properly, so there are sometimes sparks left over and it causes fires when it is emptied onto the dump,” he said.
McDonald told the Observer yesterday that the blaze was already under control, and said it should be extinguished before the weekend is out.
“Because of the dryness of the time and the high winds, we are trying to control it as quickly as possible but it should be out by Sunday,” the landfill manager said.
