Security on high alert in Trelawny
Trelawny officials are on high alert, starting today with the warm-up match between the West Indies and Kenya at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, which will also host the opening ceremony of the Cricket World Cup in six days.
Superintendent in charge of the parish, Linnette Williams Martin said the Trelawny police had moved into high gear, assisted by security personnel from across the island, for the remaining three warm-up matches ahead of Sunday’s opening ceremony.
“As it relates to security at the stadium, it’s a combination of officers from across the island,” she said. “But we are on high alert for this important event and will also continue to police the town as usual.”
She said that her contingent of officers had been enough to meet the necessary security demands for the world’s third largest sporting event and that there had been no need to recall officers from vacation or remove them from desk duties.
At the same time, the parish’s Fire Chief Dolfin Doeman said the necessary arrangements had been put in place which will see a fire unit being stationed at the stadium located just outside of Falmouth in the Florence Hall area.
“We have a team of persons on site from both Trelawny and St James,” he told the Observer. “We will have a unit on site as well and a unit at our station on high alert.”
He said the parish’s firefighters would be assisted by the St James department, which recently received a contingent of five new fire units. Trelawny initially had one unit but has received another on loan.
The only drawback he noted was that the new station, which was supposed to be ready in time for the World Cup, has not been completed. “We would have liked to move into the new building but it’s not quite ready yet,” he complained.
