‘Thank God we won!’
FALMOUTH GARDENS, Trelawny
Florence ‘Joy’ Lowers was one of the happiest persons in Falmouth on Tuesday after her son’s bedroom received a ‘magical’ facelift courtesy of the Jamaica Observer Limited and its corporate sponsors.
According to Lowers, her 28 year-old son, Bjorn “Christopher” Adams, had been disabled since falling to floor and suffering brain damage at birth and she had prayed hard to win ‘the Jamaica Observer Courts dreamhome makeover competition.
“I said, ‘Lord I am going to make a try because Christopher is in dire need.’ When you see him on the floor it pains me, but what could I do? I am not the type of person to go around and beg and ask. And I prayed that morning. It took only a $30 stamp and an envelope. And to make sure that that went, I did another two and drop them off at Courts,” the elated mother told the Observer West at the presentation.
Co-ordinated by Marlon Davis, head of promotions at the Jamaica Observer Limited, the competition, which is sponsored in the main by Courts Jamaica, Sherwin Williams and Pings Fabric; and by association through the involvement of Beaches Resorts, is in its second year.
According to Edward Khoury, chief executive officer of the Jamaica Observer, the competition represented a means of ensuring the survival of the businesses that supported it.
“I think for any business to survive they also need to recognise that they have to be a part of their society as well, they can’t be for themselves. If your business is only for yourself, in the end it must collapse. You have to give back where you get so you have to be a part of the society as well,” he said.
“We certainly want to keep doing this for as long as we possibly can. I want to thank all the sponsors for being a part of this because we need the sponsors to keep it going and we appreciate it,” he added.
Christopher’s new-look-room — by interior designer Fay Wint-Smith — was furnished with a queen-sized bed specifically designed to support Christopher’s back, an entertainment centre, chest of drawers and a television set.
