Dwight Nelson undergoes heart surgery in US
PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions and vice-president of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), Senator Dwight Nelson, is currently hospitalised in Miami, Florida with a heart condition.
Sources told the Observer yesterday that Senator Nelson, who has been ill for the past few weeks, did surgery yesterday and is likely to do another sometime today.
According to his family, he has been suffering from a couple of blocked tubes and, although one has now been confirmed as not as serious as originally thought, the other could be a problem leading to intensive surgery.
BITU President Ruddy Spencer confirmed yesterday that Nelson flew to Miami on Sunday to do testing and evaluation of his heart condition, following problems which had arisen recently. He said that the senator has since done a number of tests.
There is no indication yet as to when he is likely to return home.
Nelson, 57, is also the information spokesman for the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party.
