52,000 kids sit GSAT today
MORE than 52,000 children will today sit the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) as they vie for a place in the island’s secondary schools.
The actual number of students registered with the Ministry of Education up to yesterday was 52,709, but manager of the ministry’s Student Assessment Unit, Sephlin Myers-Thomas, said she couldn’t say for certain that that many students would sit the exam. She said there was a three per cent withdrawal rate and that students have been withdrawing their entries because of various reasons, including their perceived state of readiness.
The most common reason however, according to Myers-Thomas, was the age factor.
Normally, any student who attains the grade six level and is between 11 and 13, according to their years of birth, is qualified to sit the exam.
