JTA wants to present policy position to political parties
MONTEGO BAY, St James-President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), Hopeton Henry, wants the association to present its policy position on education to the political parties during the general election campaign.
“We are almost in the middle of an election campaign and I suggest that the JTA should be putting forward its policy position on education to the political parties and to see how well there is congruence between our views and their views,” Henry said during Wednesday’s opening session of the JTA’s three-day conference at the Holiday Inn Sunspree.
General elections are constitutionally due October, but political pundits are predicting that the polls could be held earlier amidst heightened activites by the two major political parties.
On Wednesday, Henry stressed that the association should be “fully involved in putting forward its views at this time”.
“We ought to be doing some bold things in relation to our ideas to challenge some of the perceptions that are out there,” he added.
The conference, Henry said, will expose participants to some of the latest innovations in effective teaching strategies.
“There will be intense discussion, cutting-edge presentations, exposure to the latest there is in technology and its application to education, and we will getting an opportunity to get our practice to an even higher level,” he said.
The conference is being held under the theme ‘Teaching for Success – Reaching Every Learner’.
