Golding completes team
ELEVEN ministers of state and two parliamentary secretaries will be sworn in at King’s House tomorrow morning, completing the list of ministers and junior ministers in the new Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration.
Among the 11 ministers of state is newly elected Member of Parliament for Western St Mary Robert “Bobby” Montaque, who will be in charge of the local government portfolio, since the ministry has been abolished by Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
Also included is the party’s former spokesperson on local government, Shahine Robinson, who will, instead, take charge of the proposed programme to allocate 2 1/2 per cent of the budget to the 60 members of parliament for local development.
Daryl Vaz, who is currently facing a constitutional court action following allegations that he holds United States citizenship, is expected to be assigned to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). The action was brought by his defeated People’s National Party (PNP) opponent in the September 3 general election, Abe Dabdoub.
Joseph Hibbert, a former chief technical director in the Ministry of Works (1989-2000) and who has been MP for East Rural St Andrew since 2002, is expected to be assigned to the Ministry of Transport and Works.
Michael Stern and Laurie Broderick are the two newcomers that have been included. Stern, who defeated former PNP Minister of State for Works Richard Azan, in North West Clarendon, is expected to go to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce while Broderick, who defeated the former Minister of Health, Horace Dalley, in Northern Clarendon, will be going to Mining, Energy and Telecommunications.
Everald Warmington is also expected to join the Ministry of Transport and Works; Dr Ronald Robinson, the former G2K head, is expected to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; and Andrew Gallimore is expected to go to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
J C Hutchinson, a former spokesman on agriculture, is expected to join his fellow parishioner, Minister Chris Tufton, at Agriculture, while Arthur Williams, who lost in South East St Catherine, is expected to join the Ministry of Justice.
Two leaders of the party’s affiliates have been named Parliament Secretaries – G2K president, Warren Newby, is expected to join the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports and Aundre Franklin will be at the Ministry of Housing and Water.
