Westmoreland circuit opens

Justice Roy Jones has expressed concern at the predominance of murders and sex offences up for trial during the Michaelmas session of the Westmoreland Circuit Court which started in the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Ten murder and 10 sexual offence cases are among the 24 listed to be tried during the session which ends on October 31.

Nevertheless Jones used the opportunity to commend the jurors who turned up for service.

“This is an opportunity for you to ensure that something is done,” he said.

Some 80 jurors – more than half the 150 slated to appear – turned up.

A breakdown of the case list revealed four cases of rape; four carnal abuse; two cases of incest; three wounding with intent and one motor manslaughter in addition to the 10 murders.
