Unique Ballers meet Lady Avalanche in b-ball battle Saturday
MONTEGO BAY, St James-
Defending champions Unique Ballers and joint leaders Lady Avalanche will meet in what promises to be an interesting Western Basketball Association’s Female League on Saturday at the Montego Bay Cricket Club starting at 5:30 pm.
Both teams won their opening games and are sitting on top of the points tables and will seek to establish themselves as the team to beat this year.
Former two-time champions Lady Avalanche whom Unique Ballers replaced last year, are coming off a 37-29 win over the feisty Naldi Knights from their opening game last Saturday.
A week earlier the Trelawny-based Unique Ballers had beaten Pacers 60-19 to open their season and despite giving up height advantage to Lady Avalanche, will start favourites on Saturday.
Last weekend, despite a big first-half lead and holding Naldi Knights to zero in the second quarter, Lady Avalanche was made to work for their win.
The teams were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, but Naldi Knights failed to register a point in the second half and trailed 22-9.
However led by Cyonie Gowe who came off the bench to score 10 points, Naldi outscored Lady Avalanche 13-5 in the third quarter and came within four points of tying the scores.
That would be as close as they would come however as the Galton Taylor-coached Lady Avalanche held on to score a well-deserved win.
Nicole Dias led Lady Avalanche with 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots while Suzette Virgo and Ladonna Lamonth scored eight points each.
Allisa Dawkins led Knights with 14 points while Shadian Hemmings scored two points but had 12 steals and four assists.
