Thousands of dead fish washed up in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Thousands of dead fish are washing up on the shores of a lagoon in Puerto Rico’s capital.
Javier Laureano of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program says the deaths are not related to an explosion at a nearby fuel depot that burned for two days before the fire was put out this weekend.
Laureano said yesterday that the tilapia, sardines and other fish suffocated because of poor water circulation in San Jose Lagoon. He says the lagoon had another big fish kill about 18 months ago.
The fish have been washing ashore near one of San Juan’s most heavily populated areas since Friday.
The US Caribbean territory’s Department of Natural and Eces is organizing a clean-up this week.
