Wadadah safe
MONTEGO BAY, St James Two-time defending Captain’s Bakery Western Confederation Super League champions Wadadah FC were handed a reprieve on Monday via the acceptance of their late registration forms and entry fees.
For the second straight year Wadadah had missed the original deadline to hand in their entries, but were given a lifeline when the deadline was extended to Monday afternoon.
Wadadah were the last of the 12 teams in the competition to hand in their registration forms as the other 11 teams, including four newcomers, had made it before the October 16 deadline.
The teams had four days October 13 – 16 to complete their registration for the competition, which is set to kick off on November 8.
Marline Brown, an executive with the Western Confederation Super League, confirmed that the $20,000 entry fee plus $10,000 late fee had been accepted.
“A representative of the club brought in the papers and the fees to the office on Monday afternoon and this morning we got the go ahead from the chairman that we should include them in the fixtures,” she reported.
Last season Wadadah had started the season without paying their fees but was kicked out of the competition after a cheque they submitted was returned. After missing about four games, Wadadah was eventually allowed back into the competition and went on to win it, advancing to the play-offs for the Digicel Premier League where they failed to advance.
Wadadah had finished fourth in the points tables before upsetting favourites Seba United in the semi-finals then beating Frome FC in the two-way finals to retain their title.
This season, four new teams Exidus of Trelawny, Catherine Hall of St James, Prosper of Hanover, and Petersfield of Westmoreland will join Reno FC – who were relegated from the Digicel Premier League – as well as the other teams that survived from last season.
The other teams taking part are former champions Granville, Mt Pelier, Bamboo and Violet Kickers.
