Joe Public, W Connection to clash in FA Trophy final
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Pro League champions Joe Public and Caribbean Football Union Club kings W Connection will clash in the FA Trophy here on Wednesday, after scoring contrasting wins in their respective semi-finals on Monday night.
While W Connection needed a late goal to edge Petrotrin 1-0, Joe Public came from a goal down to hammer Caledonia 3-1 in the double-header at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
In the first match, Dominican Republic striker Frias scored the lone goal for W Connection nine minutes from full-time when he collected a pass from Brazilian Jose Luis Seabra and fired past national Under-20 goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel from close range.
Petrotrin’s best chance of the match came in the 84th minute when substitute Arnold Dwarika forced goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams into a finger tip save to push over a long range effort.
In the night’s second encounter, Caledonia took the lead in the 29th minute through winger Kareem Joseph after neat build-up play with Ryan Stewart.
Their lead was short-lived, however, as Micah Lewis replied from close range two minutes later, following a right-sided Kerry Baptiste cross.
Guyanese defender and Caledonia captain Charles Pollard almost regained the lead for his side but his powerful downward header from a left sided free-kick by fellow Guyanese Walter Moore missed its target.
Joe Public raised the tempo after half-time and took the lead in the 56th minute through a penalty from Baptiste after Jamaican goalkeeper Kevin Graham needlessly fouled Lewis inside the 18-yard box.
Substitute Devon Leacock sealed the win with a low drive in the 90th minute to keep his team on course to add to its previous successes of 2001, 2004 and 2007.
