Mannings stun Knibb in U-19 basketball
SAV LA MAR, Westmoreland — Mannings School scored an upset win over William Knibb Memorial by 34 points, 94-60, in their return-round ISSA/KFC Western Conference high schools basketball championships Under-19 game on Thursday.
Despite losing team captain Andre Davids, who dislocated his shoulder during the game, Mannings avenged their first-round 55-49 loss to join Muschett High on eight points.
Davids is expected to be out for three weeks.
Herbert Morrison Technical, who have 14 points from seven wins, lead the section, four more than defending champions Cornwall College (10), with William Knibb next on nine and Spot Valley on five points after five losses.
William Knibb, however, prevailed in the Under-16 game, beating Mannings, 57-29, to hand the Westmorelanders their sixth straight defeat.
William Knibb joined Cornwall and Herbert Morrison on 10 points. Muschett are next on seven points, one more than Mannings, while Rhodes Hall have two points from their one win so far.
Led by Troy Reid, who had four three-point baskets in his game-high 39 points, Mannings got off to a fast start in the Under-19 game to keep William Knibb at bay.
Mannings led by 11 points, 28-17, after the first quarter and were up by 13 points at half-time, 42-29, increasing the lead to 29 as they led 66-37 at the end of the third quarter.
Ruel Gordon backed up Reid with 20 points, while Adrian McCallum chipped in with 12 for the winners.
Orville Ennis led William Knibb with 29 points, Jamari Hines scored 20 while Remand Bowers scored nine points.
In the Under-16 game, the visitors was led by Shavaughn Reid who scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds; Alpha Wright scored 15 points and had 18 rebounds, while Dexter Anderson scored 14 points.
