J’can-born Jackson’s strike not enough for Gillingham
LONDON, England (CMC) — Barbadian international Emmerson Boyce scored to help Wigan Athletic snatch a share of the points, but Jamaica-born striker Simeon Jackson’s 10th goal was not enough to save Gillingham from defeat on Saturday.
The 30-year old Boyce, who plays in the centre of defence, got Wigan on the scoresheet first with a diving header but they twice squandered leads to draw 2-2 with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium in the Premiership.
Jackson, meanwhile, also put Gillingham ahead in the early stages of their match but Huddersfield Town scored twice in the dying stages of the first half to grab a 2-1 win in League Two.
Boyce, who made his debut for Barbados last year March against Dominica, was the unlikely hero as he headed in a rebound in the 15th minute after goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen had parried a shot from Colombian forward Hugo Rodallega.
He sustained a head injury in the process but after on-field treatment, carried on with a bandage.
It was his second goal in just over month after he scored in a 3-1 win over Burnley in late October, and his third of the season.
Eight minutes before the break, Tuncay Sanli scored his first goal for Stoke to level the scores, but Honduran international Maynor Figueroa scored a long-range wonder goal to give the visitors the lead for the second time.
It was cancelled out two minutes later, however, when Ryan Shawcross dumped his header into the back of the nets.At the Galpharm Stadium in northern England, the 22-year-old Jackson scored in the third minute when he produced a superb lob following a long bal out of the back but Lee Novak scored his fourth goal in five games to draw the hosts level.
In first half stoppage time, Jordan Rhodes then nodded in Gary Robert’s corner to seal the first win for Huddersfield in four league outings.
