Granville, Catherine Hall score wins in Western Confed Super League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Granville FC and newcomers Catherine Hall both scored big wins on Sunday as the first round of the Captain’s Bakery Western Confederation Super League continued with four games.
The wins set up what could be an interesting game between both winners tomorrow in a rescheduled game set for the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College grounds. Granville had come from behind to beat Catherine Hall 2-1 in a St James Knockout semi-final two weeks ago and will hold the advantage tomorrow.
On Sunday Garth Johnson scored twice in the first half, as Granville romped past defending champions Wadadah 5-1 at the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College grounds.
This was Granville’s third straight win over Wadadah, who have now lost seven of their eight games played and are second to last in the points tables with three points.
Wadadah had the first chance to score, but Steven Irving missed from point blank range in the ninth minute, side-footing the ball wide of the right post with goalkeeper Everette Nunez stranded in the middle of the goal.
Granville, however, took over the game and scored three times in a seven-minute period to dismantle the contest.
Odean Snow caught the Wadadah team napping in the 17th minute and raced a full 35 yards before sliding the ball under the body of goalkeeper Sean Sawyers and over the line.
Johnson made it 2-0 two minutes later when the Wadadah defence again fell apart and he raced through the middle to power home a cross from David Gillard from the left wing.
Johnson completed his brace in the 24th minute when his shot from close range deflected off a defender and beat Sawyers to his left.
Michael Thompson made it 4-0 before half-time, while Davian Thelwell scored the fifth midway the second half.
Curtis Palmer scored Wadadah’s lone goal as the champions have now conceded a league-high 22 goals in their eight games.
At Petersfield, the home team went ahead midway the first half, but Catherine Hall scored four unanswered to record their third win of the season.
Ian McDonald equalised for Catherine Hall on the stroke of half-time before the Montego Bay team took over in the second half.
Carl Henry gave Catherine Hall the lead early in the second half, while Terry Thompson scored twice to seal the three points.
At the Frome Sports Club, leaders Reno had their four-game win streak snapped, as they were held 1-1 by Frome in a Westmoreland derby.
Violet Kickers also had a two-game winning streak snapped after they came from behind to draw 1-1 with last-placed Prosper at the UDC field.
