Captain’s Bakery pumps more dough into Clarendon Major League
MONYMUSK, Clarendon — The 2009/2010 staging of the Clarendon Football Association (CFA) Major League was launched on Saturday at the Monymusk Employees Club, with sponsors The Captain’s Bakery and Grill committing $1.6 million to the running of the league.
In his address, president of CFA Michael Ricketts thanked the sponsors for their continued support and also warned the teams against breaking the competition’s regulations, as he urged them to take full control of their supporters.
“I would just like to assure you that the Clarendon Football Association will be supporting you 100 per cent, but as I said we are guided by the rules and we don’t expect you to flaunt the regulations and the rules. If you do, certainly there will be sanctions,” Ricketts said.
“It is (also) important that you make sure that your supporters are at their best behaviour because anywhere in the world, once you are playing football you have responsibility for your supporters,” implored Ricketts.
The Captain’s Bakery and Grill’s financial controller, Wayne Soltau, said his company is committed to nation building.
“We at The Captain’s Bakery and Grill are committed to the continued development of people and the uniting of communities and in exchange we ask for a well run competition, one with the highest level of discipline, one that Captain’s Bakery can be proud of,” he said.
“And I implore you, when you want about a bread for your household, just remember the Captain’s Bakery (as) the more you support us the more we will increase the sponsorship”, added Soltau.
The Captain’s Bakery and Grill chain is owned and operated by Captain Horace Burrell, the president of the Jamaica Football Federation.
Meanwhile, Morgan’s Pass FC were a late withdrawal from the league and will be replaced by Young Strikers who finished fourth in the Division One competition last year.
In the opening game, Milk River United blanked York Town FC 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Jameal Forrester.
Forrester gave his team the lead when he stabbed home a low right-sided cross in the 21st minute and should have doubled his team’s advantage two minutes later, but flashed his shot wide of the left upright from inside the box with the goalkeeper at his mercy.
Forrester, however, grabbed his double in the 31st-minute after he collected a beautiful chip-pass and placed his shot to the left of the advancing goalie.
York Town, who played with 10 men for most of the game after Kimarley Kelly was red-carded in the sixth minute for head-butting an opponent, came out looking the better team in the second-half but, despite their dominance could not get on the scoresheet.
