‘Fabulous’ walks away from Arnett coaching job, stays a player
ARNETT Gardens’ player/coach Fabian Davis has resigned the coaching portfolio of the South St Andrew club, citing a range of issues that plagued his tenure.
In a press release Sunday, Davis outlined that he accepts much of the blame for the team’s poor showing this season, but lashed the club’s management for unprofessional conduct in dealing with the problems.
“I personally thought the club organisation handled it in a very poor way… so I am left without a choice really and truly but to just walk away from the job, which is the coaching duties at the club,” he said.
Among the burning issues that Davis and the club hierarchy did not see eye-to-eye on was the “transition of the team and to groom younger players for the future”.
Also, his dual role as player and coach also presented some problems.
“The task of coaching had put a strain on my playing time and I needed to fully concentrate on the team in my capacity as player/coach,” Davis said in his release.
The former Kingston College Manning Cupper was thankful to the executive, especially Member of Parliament and club chairman Dr Omar Davies for the giving him the opportunity to prove himself in the coaching arena at the highest level locally.
But again, he lamented the poor handling of the coaching situation and insists he would prefer to concentrate on playing for the rest of the season.
“In every sporting field, if a coach is not doing his job then you know how it goes… but the players also have to go out and execute what they have been taught, and I believe they tried but it just did not work out,” he said.
Although his stint at Arnett has ended, Davis believes there is a future for him in the field of coaching.
“I will just have to refocus and take it one day at a time, because it’s a whole learning process… whether you are 10 or 20 years in the job, coaching or playing, you are always learning. And there is a lot of room for improvement,” he said.
But for now, his focus is on helping to lift Arnett from the doldrums of the Digicel Premier League. The former back-to-back Premier League champions, sit in 11th position in the 12-team league with only 21 points from 22 matches.
“I will be in the team working hard, I will try my very best to lift the team with some good performances,” he ended.
For the time being, the club has installed what it calls a coaching panel headed by Richard ‘Charlie Chaplin’ Bennett.
