Kantasingh revels in latest success
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Young Trinidadian left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh, who led the Combined Campuses and Colleges to a 151-run win over Trinidad & Tobago in their first-round regional four-day game at Jarrett Park on Monday, was the outstanding player of the match.
Kantasingh took 12 wickets, six in each of the Trinidad innings. In the first innings under clear skies on Saturday, the left-hander twirled his fingers to figures of six for 29 off 12.4 overs and after sitting out Sunday’s rain affected day, returned under cloudy skies and cool conditions to take six for 55 off 22 overs on Monday.
In an interview with the Observer after the game, the 23-year-old Kantasingh said he just tried to duplicate what he had done on Saturday.
“I just tried to follow up on Saturday’s performance,” he said. “We already assessed the wicket after rain set us back on Sunday.”
On Monday he said they expected the wicket would be slower, “so I had to make some adjustments”. He was quick to add that it was a team effort, however.
“It was a good one for me, but the batsmen who applied themselves got something out of it as well.”
His teammate Omar Phillips of Barbados made 88 and 70 not out and was the only batsman to make over 50 for either side.
“At the end of the day I just tried to push myself and improve on my performance from Saturday,” he said.
Playing against the country of his birth did not really make a difference either way, he pointed out.
“I play for whichever team I am selected on and always give 100 per cent.
“I am a Trinidadian playing against fellow Trinidadians, but at the end of the day I am representing this CCC team and I am going out there to do my best and whichever team I play for they will get the best out of me.
“I am the type of person who always performs for my team and do the best for my team,” he said.
